There are a lot of internet index/search/archive sites. YAHOO, Webcrawler, Alta Vista and DejaNews are some of my favorites.
Hobbes' Internet Timeline has a chronological listing of what was going on while you weren't paying attention.

I guess that you have to start with IBM.
Then there's DEC and HP.
Seagate, Micropolis make disk drives.

Computer Industry Software links...

Samba is a software package which reproduces the functionality and eliminates the need for LAN Manager and Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server.
GNU and the Free Software Foundation provided much of what we now know as "Linux."
Netscape has joined the "open source" community with their WWW browser available here.
ftp.cdrom.com is a pretty amazing collection of software. As far as I can tell, they have a copy of every CD ever made online.
TUCOWS is an acronym, and they keep a pretty good collection of free and shareware.

Perl is the differentest programming language that money can't buy.
PostgreSQL is descendant of the Berkley Ingress SQL database project.

Linux links...

Linux is probably the greatest collection of software ever. There has been a lot of "open source" software available before, but nothing brought it all together like Linus, and his operating system.
Here is a list of system and application software available for Linux.
Red Hat Software and Caldera are two of the companies distributing commercially supported, easilly installed Linux.
The Linux Journal is a magazine which covers the Linux community.
Linuxmanship is a term which describes the right attitude and the right method for promoting Linux.

Local Suburban DC links...

The Journal is the local paper. Plus, we have the Washington Post.
WRC, WTTG, WJLA, WDVM, WDCA are the local television stations.
Merriweather Post Pavilion, Wolf Trap and Nissan Pavilion at Stoneridge are the local concert venues for name-brand acts.
Washington Metro Area Transit Authority runs our subway.
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission operate two nice local parks, Lake Needwood and Wheaton Regional Park
